Are You Doing Penance on Fridays?
January7,2012
Every Friday is a day in which Catholics are supposed to be doing penance. Are you?
Canon Law #1250 states: "All Fridays through the year and the time of Lent are penitential days and times throughout the universal Church."
Canon #1251: "Abstinence from eating meat or another food according to the prescriptions of the conference of bishops is to be observed on Fridays throughout the year unless they are solemnities. . . ."
Yes, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops has obtained permission from the Vatican to obviate the necessity of avoiding meat on Fridays IF we do another form of penance on Fridays. Are you? How about attending Mass, saying an extra rosary, making the Stations of the Cross, visiting the elderly?
Don't give God lip service. Show him how much you love Him just as He showed you how much He loved you by His suffering and death on a cross.
